My final thoughts about my WLE are fairly good. Although I enjoy my workplace, me and my mentor left on a bad note. We got into a small argument. We talked it out and solved it, but I can personally still sense the friction between us. He says that I can always have a job a UDZI, but I don't think I'm going to go for it. I already have a job first of all, and back when I used to work for him, his short temper got in the way of things. I plan on keeping contact with him, but there will be no more further work done with my mentor.

Today, I did the usual; Printing, then waiting, then helping around, then waiting more. I've improved as a intern because I'm used to how the ball rolls around my workplace. I've learned to be patient when it comes to printing because the majority of the time, the longer it takes, the better quality the printer is making the media. What makes my workplace such a great place to work is that it's really relaxed. I like the relaxed environment because it can help me gather more valuable and insightful thought to be put into the company. At this point, David trusts me 100% and can see my potential at his company. Although all these things make my workplace great, it makes it bad at the same time because the relaxed environment makes me get sidetracked sometimes because I'm just waiting for printing to get done.

In order to find my WLE and get hired, I had to call multiple places to find a workplace that would accept high school students. Lucky for me, I knew about UDZI because I used to be employed there. Unfortunately, UDZI was a last resort because no other place would accept me. David knew I needed it to graduate, so he let me intern there with Johnny Khu. The most effective way of looking for a job and getting hired is by being persistent. As long as you show responsibility and can back up your words, you can get hired. It's been easy for me to get hired because I have a mouthpiece. I can communicate really effectively. As a result of my WLE, I think being a professional or a responsible adult in the work world means to be persistent, responsible, and hard working. The persistence will get your foot in the door, and the responsibility and effort will maintain your professionalism

I learned a lot about myself. I learned that I can be flakey at times, and that I need to communicate more often. I also learned that I have a lot of potential in the printing industry. It doesn't come as too much as a shock because I've grown up around the printing industry. Some challenges I face when it comes to my workplace is when the printer gets jammed. One way I overcame this was by using a ruler to hold down the media once the printer head came around. By doing this, the printer head wouldn't come in contact to the media and jam itself.I learned that there's short cuts for almost anything in life and some are easier to find out than others. I could have stopped the printer, put down the holders that hold the media in place, then restarted the print, but instead I held down both sides until the print was completed. This way I saved ink, and it thought me about loop holes. During these experiences, my creativity was put to use all the time. In the Printing industry, you constantly have to be creative, even when it comes to placement of the prints. Sometimes I even have to "trick" the printer to think that it's printing something smaller than 48" because the biggest the printer can print is 48" (64" after my little trick). My trick is to simply force the printer to think that it's only printing on a 48" media, when really it's printing on 64" media! Before my WLE, I didn't believe this profession was that serious. My family had a similar business, which is why I don't think I took it serious at first. But once I realized how important and UDZI was, I felt obligated to fulfill the reputation it had. I learned how to grand format print. This process was when I receive a file from the graphic designer, I had to rip the file in Production House 7.0 then print on a desired media Determining the media was probably one of the hardest parts because there was so many different types, weights, thickness, etc.
After completing my WLE, I learned that even though I'm good in the printing industry, it's not my ideal job for the future. It's really boring and takes too much time in between prints.

  1. The leadership skill I use the most is to Collaborate Productively. I'm constantly working either with my mentor, or with another co-worker. To work together means a lot in my workplace. I'm using the leadership skill very well; I'm always open minded, so I don't take the criticism as a bad thing and I'm always accepting new ideas. This helps me get my work done because we can get the job done better and faster. The leadership skill my mentor uses the most is communicating powerfully. His ideals and philosophies are reflected in his business.

Today, I made several banners and cut them out. It took me several tries to cut a straight line, even with using a ruler. I ended up messing up and having to reprint the banner. David and I talked about my project and we determined that it would be a good idea to make a banner and that I can use Adobe Illustrator to design the banner.

I am thinking about making a banner for our school.I came up with this idea with Ms. Winn and my mentor. After debating on several ideas, I decided a banner would be a good project. I'm going to need to talk with the Admin to see what they'd want on the banner. I could even design a few banners and ask them which one would be best.

My title and main responsibility is Grand Format Printing. As a Grand Format Printer, I print out huge prints on different types of media and cut them out into huge stickers. For example, any of the decals on the sides of the majority of big rigs are done by companies like UDZI. Even though I print out the media, I'm also the applicator. This means after I cut out the stickers, sometimes I have to apply the stickers on signs or even cars. applying the media is the most treacherous of the jobs at my workplace because it requires a lot of time and patience. Although printing takes time  patients, the applicator is considered a "lower" job in the printing industry. A normal day at my workplace, I print out media, cut the media to the desired size, shape, etc. After I do that, then I either give the media to Steve or applied the media myself if I was instructed to.

My mentor's name is David. He's the owner of the company Unique DeZign & Impressions. He also gives me hands-on training on areas that I'm not familiar with. I go in, get the job jacket that shows me what job I'll be completing. I get on the computer and go through a ripping programs called Production House 7.0 and print on a 64- inch printer. David has been in the printing industry for over 10 years, and went from being a worker, to a business owner.

My workplace is called Unique DeZign and Impressions. We are a printing and graphic shop. For example we make shirts, banners, vinal, etc.
It's a medium sized business. My workplace is located in Hayward down the street from the school. It's right off of Industrial. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is a small office with a back door. The back door leads to a warehouse. In the corner of the warehouse I have my own desk, but I have to share an office with Erin, our Graphic Designer. I'm not sure how many people work there daily, but on my WLE days, there's six of us.
My workplace employs anyone who demonstrates ambition. My mentor, David, constantly tells me that he'll hire anyone, regardless of age, as long as they demonstrate self-advocacy and really assume a leadership role.

A lot of the people at my workplace are currently going to college and working part-time.
My workplace serves any company or person that desires large format printing or media application.
It's very academic supportive workplace. I have yet to find any weaknesses of my workplace.
